Definition
Biological oxygen demand (BOD) is defined as the amount of oxygen required by the microorganisms for the biological oxidation of organic wastes present in 1litre of waste water under aerobic condition for a period of 5 days at 20o C.
Importance of BOD:
i) BOD is important in sewage treatment, as it indicates the amount of decomposable organic matter in the sewage.
ii)
It has the special significance in pollution control.
iii)
It also tell us about the amount of dissolved oxygen in water because it will
be so greatly reduced that fish no longer survive in water.
iv)
Greater the concentration of organic matter in the sewage, grater the BOD.
